The tradition is almost as old as the tournament itself. When the very first Wimbledon Championship took place in 1877, strawberries and cream were served to the spectators.

The pairing was originally popularised in the court of King Henry VIII by his Lord Chancellor, Thomas Wolsey, in the early 16th century. Because the tennis tournament coincided with the fleetingly short English strawberry harvest, it quickly became the fashionable snack of the summer. Today, tennis fans devour over 38 tons of fresh strawberries and thousands of liters of cream over the course of the fortnight!
